Windpower in Canada
In Canada, government initiatives to foster the development of wind energy were implemented somewhat later than in many other countries around the world. However, since 2001, Canadian wind energy has evolved from obscurity to one of the world’s largest and fastest growing markets, driven largely by national production incentives and provincial renewable energy targets. These targets have obligated the largely provincial owned utilities and related entities in Canada to procure large blocks of renewable energy, especially wind energy, through power calls that have ranged in scale from 100 kW to 1,500 MW, in virtually every Canadian province, but concentrated in British Columbia, Ontario and Québec. GWEC reports that Canadian provincial governments are currently seeking to put in place a minimum aggregate of 10,000 MW installed windpower capacity by 2015.
