Since the 1990s, advances in windpower technology and government incentives have contributed to improving the economics of windpower generation sufficiently for the technology to become competitive with other sources of electricity generation. Over the last 20 years, according to AWEA, the cost of electricity generation from utility-scale wind systems has dropped by more than 80%. The price of windpower is now considered to be competitive with many traditional energy technologies.
